Quality during Design Newsletter

Ideas with others: a Chief Engineer shares advice

This weekly newsletter shares resources for product designers (since 2021), brought to you by Dianna Deeney.

Part of our mission at Quality during Design is to get cross-functional teams together during concept development for design input. In that spirit, we're sharing with you some best practices to facilitate meetings and move toward actionable ideas.

In this archive episode, we talk with Emily Haidemenos. She's a Chief Engineer and Six-Sigma Black Belt working in product design engineering for next generation high voltage automotive products. She shares her best practices and defenses against common challenges with brainstorming. And some of the successes she's had with it in new product design!

Next week, we'll talk more about when to use quality tools when facilitating team meetings. It will be one that you won't want to miss!

Recommendations

I like to interview members of a cross-functional team on the Quality during Design Podcast. They're all collected in Season 3, or on the website under the search term "a chat".

  • S3E4: Shere Tuckey talked about Crucial Conversations and some of the mindsets we can take on to better communicate with others when things might get tricky.
  • S3E5: Sol Rosenbaum and I talk about engineering with reciprocity, ideas of how to approach collaboration with other engineers on a team or in the workplace.

Where do you meet-up?

I have a friend who has made it a goal this year to attend at least 4 events per month.

When I think of 4 events to go to within a month, I get a little stuck of where to go! I'm not a homebody. I volunteer and organize field trips for teens.

Yes, there are some local chapters of professional societies I should follow-up on, and I will. But the ones I'm thinking of right now will not get me to 4 events every month!

I NEED YOUR IDEAS If you wanted to attend 4 events related to your work this month, what would they be? These events can be tangentially related to work, and they can be virtual or in-person.

Please let me know! You can respond to this email. I'm also going to ask on Linked-In. Given enough responses, I'll share the results with you in a future newsletter.
